Canada Sets Aside Its Boreal Forest As Giant Carbon Vault

Good news to the north...

In the far north latitudes, buried within a seemingly endless expanse of evergreen forests, the authorities in Canada are building up one of the world's best natural defences against global warming.

In a series of initiatives, Canadian provincial governments and aboriginal leaders have set aside vast tracts of coniferous woods, wetlands, and peat. The conservation drive bans logging, mining, and oil drilling on some 250m acres – an area more than twice the size of California.

In a few years, once systems are in place for valuing additional services that forests provide (they not only suck up the heat-trapping gas, CO2, but also provide such FREE services as water filtration and provision), Canada's investment will become even more valuable.

  1. That's great news! I just hope Canada becomes an example of attitude towards our planet. It's a place that we all share together, and I'm always glad to hear someone's trying to do something to make this planet a better place to live. Especially if it's happening in a country I live in.
